Sea of Glass
Rev 4:6 Also before the throne there was what looked like a sea of glass, clear as crystal.
I have read and heard this description of Heaven on numerous occasions through the years but never realized what God may have been trying to communicate to us through this phrase.
I had a wonderful childhood! I lived several years on Wright Basin that was attached to Blackwater River in Milton, Florida. Because we lived right on the water, my friend and I had an advantage over everybody else that did not live on the water but enjoyed water sports on that piece of paradise. While they were loading their boats and driving to the basin, Brook and I would already be enjoying the undisturbed waters.
I remember the joy of going early in the morning to water ski while the water was still a smooth as glass. Not one ripple could be seen across the entire basin, it truly appeared to be a “Sea of Glass.”
In the Scriptures, “Seas” often represented humanity. We still use the expression, “Sea of humanity” when referring to a large number of people. This Sea appears to represent “Humanity at perfect rest.”
The “Sea of Glass” that is mentioned in this passage is located “before the throne” of God. I believe it represents perfect rest and peace! Not one wave, not one ripple, complete rest and peace, undisturbed by even the slightest wind or interruption. That is an awesome picture of Heaven.
However, we can enjoy that picture of Heaven now, here on earth! If we would get off the throne of our own hearts and allow the Prince of Peace to reign. If we would stay in perfect submission to His Authority. If we could place our complete confidence and trust in His Lordship, then we could experience the place of complete rest and peace, regardless of what may be happening around us. Does He not invite us to, "Be still, and know that I am God” Psa. 46:10
I pray that you will allow the Prince of Peace to reign on the throne of your heart so that you can enjoy the Peace of God that transcends all natural understanding. Abide in His Rest and enjoy the “Sea of Glass” that is beneath His Throne of Authority!
